Local politics

I normally don’t get too bothered with local politics (here or in other places I’ve lived in). I guess I get enough of that from back home. But this case of the new coalition is just beyond ignoring.. What made me write about it? The new Foregin Minister - Mr. Peter Winston. If you asked me who the last person should be on the list for this position, you guessed it, Mr. Winston. You could NOT have in this office someone more xenophobic, and unsuitable than him. Some quotes from Mr. Peter Winston:
“We are being dragged into the status of an Asian colony and it is time that New Zealanders were placed first in their own country.” - In July 2004, following a government decision to increase the number of new migrants in the coming year.
“We have now reached the point where you can wander down Queen Street in Auckland and wonder if you are still in New Zealand or some other country.” - Peters announcing “flying squads” to search for potentially risky immigrants.
“We place our country at risk by bringing in thousands of people whose views are formed by alien cultures and rigid religious practices. If immigrants are allowed to settle here, regardless of their ability or willingness to live in harmony with us, we will create a breeding ground for conflict.” - In 2002.
Peters on others:
“Smart alec, arrogant, quiche eating, chardonnay drinking, pinky finger pointing snobbery, fart blossom.” - Peters on big city media commentators in 2002.
Hmm.. this is who Helen Clark, the Prime Minister, chose to represent New Zealand in the global arena.

From Mr Peters description of them, it doesn’t sound like big city media did a very good job of picking media commentators either.
Not sure who those commentators were.. sounds like a typical description of many commentators :) and un-typical politician’s response to that.
You must not hear what liberal politicians say about fox news in the US. :-)
