Singapore, Clouded in Haze, May Face Deteriorating Air Quality

We’re still suffering from bad air quality here in Singapore. The illegal fires in Indonesia genereate a lot of smoke which gets blown over to Singapore and Malaysia. These man-initiated fires have been raging every year around this time with incompetent authorities unable (or unwilling) to do anything about it. The official pollution level is “only” “nearing unhealthy levels”, I guess those colleagues around and myself who are coughing are having “healthy coughs” at the moment which will only become “unhealthy coughs” tomorrow.

The pollutants standards index, a gauge of the quality of air in the city-state, stood at 98 as of 4 p.m. local time, nearing “unhealthy” levels, according to the National Environment Agency’s Web site. A reading above 100 is considered unhealthy and the public is advised to reduce vigorous outdoor activity, the government agency said. The readings reflect an average over three-hour periods.

“The winds strengthened again by late morning today, bringing in more smoke haze from Kalimantan,” causing the index to rise, the National Environment Agency, or NEA, said in an e- mailed statement. “Prevailing winds are expected to remain southeasterly for the rest of today and tomorrow.”

I’ll be spending the rest of October away from here starting Wednesday.

Based on the map in the psi site it looks like northern Malaysia is hardly affected. Are you able to trade from there?

I guess northern Malaysia is not affected. I won’t be trading. The week is meant for me to accompany my parents and search for great food.
