The power of internet services

Just some recent observations on techie stuff.
1. I work with a group of 30-40 developers, mostly aged around mid twenties to early thirties. I walk amongst them every now and then and from what I can see there are 2 kings of internet usage at work that people will not be able to give up on: MSN Chat, and GMail. The number of hours spent on these two might be even more than time spent being productive. But that’s just my speculation.
2. There are people on MSN that I’ve never met and never will. Our only contact ever is going to be via online chat. To me, that’s kind of mind blowing in terms of what it says about how society is evolving.
3. Youtube is down for maintenance. Let me say that again, Youtube is down, it’s just not there, not available, unusable, unsearchable, unviewable. How can that be? I thought these things had a life of their own and will always be there. I can’t imagine what would happen to the world if that happened to GMail or MSN.. we might actually get some work done here ;-)
