Traders Skills and my Strengths and Weaknesses

As some readers may or may not know I come from an IT background. I’ve been around computers, software and IT people more than 2/3 of my life. Largely I owe my thanks for this to my parents who bought me a Spectrum Sinclair 48K when I was maybe 10 and since then I was hooked. Anyway, I gained a lot of benefit from being deeply involved with computers but this involvement always stopped short of actually programming or development work. Most of my previous career in IT was spent as a project manager (with the last position as a program office manager) and I always felt good about this choice of niche in IT and didn’t feel I wanted to do anything else like development, testing, BA, QA, DBA etc. So where is all this leading, well I just realized that the longer I trade the more I wish I was a developer! :-) It’s such a great skill to have and so useful in today’s world of everything-electronic trading. You can build your own integration between trading applications, better interfaces and tools for your style of trading, code systems, code indicators, build services around trading which will be useful to others and lots more. Some of the stuff I see from my trading buddies and fellow bloggers is really awesome. So why don’t I learn it? I tried, not recently but I tried when I was (much) younger and more recently sometimes when I dabble in “easy language” style system coding. I know my limits, strengths and weaknesses. I will never be a developer, it’s just not in my nature. So I naturally try to focus on what I am good at. Which I think is mainly searching and sifting through tons of information, absorbing material, prioritizing, multi-tasking, and most importantly the ability to try a million approaches to things while giving up on individual ones instantly if they don’t work and moving to the next idea, but (almost) never giving up on the big picture of what I’m trying to do and press and squeez the hell out of something till I get the desired result.
