Tony Horton’s One on One workout DVD – unmotivating?

February 17th, 2012 by eyal | 1 Comment | Filed in Living

I just started exercising at home after I cancelled my gym membership. I never really liked working out in the afternoon time slot which was the only time I could get to the gym. I much rather exercise later in the day, after I’m done with trading in the evening. So I was looking for a workout plan and some exercises I can easily do at home without getting equipment which I don’t want to store or spend on. So after looking around a little I found the P90X: Tony Horton’s 90-Day Extreme Home Fitness Workout DVD Program, but it was way way too much for my current fitness level. So I started with the 10 Minute Trainer: Tony Horton’s Workout for the Busiest People Fitness DVD Program which I really like. Anyone can put together a 30-60 minute workout, but designing a 10 minute one which is fun, challenging and comprehensive requires talent and experience.

It will take some time till I’m bored with the 10 minute trainer but I like checking out what else Tony Horton has out there since I like his style and exercises. I found the P90X One on One with Tony Horton: For P90X Grads, Collector’s Edition, Vol. 1 Workout DVDswhich is a more customizable program, just Tony doing workouts of different types.

If you want to see previews of the actual exercises you can check out youtube and even download some segments of the DVDs. You can do the exercises either with just body weight or get exercise bands like I did. It doesn’t get cheaper or free (er) than this.

Anyway, reading the review on Amazon for the one on one program one person commented on how Tony looked older and like he couldn’t care less sometimes about the workout and that he felt it was demotivating. I thought about writing a reply and figured Amazon has enough content so I might as well put this reply here instead, enter this post. So here’s the reply I started typing up and finished doing here:

I agree with this reviewer but want to offer an alternative view. When I watched the Road Warrior DVD I felt the same, man this guy is looking old, unmotivated and as if he doesn’t really want to do this. But surprisingly that had an opposite effect on me. You see, there are hundreds if not thousands of DVD’s showing super ripped, super motivated prime of their like people exercising as if that’s all they ever want to do. But guess what, life isn’t like that. Sometimes you feel unmotivated, tired, old, or overall crappy. But you still need to get off your gluteus maximus and put in the effort, the reason is obvious, because if you don’t you’d feel and look even more crappy!

So there you have it, a mini review and my opinion on Tony Horton’s workout DVDs. For anyone wanting to work out at home I’d highly recommend checking out these programs. I’m pretty sure the vast majority of people would be challenged by these programs, 10 minute if you’re a beginner, P90 Master for intermediate and P90X if you’re in top shape and want to get in an even better shape.

P.S. If I could have a chat with Tony and suggest anything to him, I’d say please please make a DVD working out with Kettlebells. Those things are the most effective weights I’ve ever tried, but that’s for another post.

Kindle Books Now Outselling Paperbacks at Amazon

January 28th, 2011 by eyal | No Comments | Filed in Leisure, Reading, Techie

That this would happen eventually I had no doubt, but the speed by which it happened is still amazing. I still haven’t bought a Kindle 3G so I’m still using my old Sony PRS-505 but I’ve started buying and downloading booksfrom Amazon and loading them into the Sony reader (this sometimes requires a bit of processing). There are a bunch of things which are convenient with the Amazon model and its ebooks (the format not being one of them ;-), I especially like is the free sample you can request which gets sent instantly to either my PC or my Android phone. It’s much easier to check out books this way and look at the table of contents. If I were to change anything in the way Amazon sends the books I would have them send the Amazon customer reviews along with the sample. I usually just ignore the top reviews and go straight to the 1-2-3 star reviews to see what issues and drawbacks people found with the book. Saved me from buying a bunch of books which otherwise seemed like a decent read if you just look at the title and raving reviews.

Free Frequent Flyer Points

July 20th, 2010 by eyal | No Comments | Filed in Personal development

Now that I have your attention, here’s why you probably should be extra careful when someone offers you free frequent flyer miles to go along with their product or service.

The basic idea is that often people focus on near term concrete goals (such as frequent flyer miles), and while trying to maximize these immediate and clear goals they forget or discount the real reason for their actions — which in your case is maximizing their financial outcome.

Dan Ariely » Blog Archive Behavioral finance lesson – frequent flyer points? «.

I make sure to read as much material Dan Ariely publishes as I can lay my hands on. I’ve read his first book Predictably Irrationaland am looking forward to reading his second: The Upside of Irrationality.

QuoteTracker replacing QCharts

October 10th, 2007 by eyal | 18 Comments | Filed in Day Trading, Resources

Since I’ve been experiencing issues with the internet (to put things mildly) a few weeks ago, I’ve been looking for ways I can improve speed of things on my end. This included moving to being connected via Ethernet wire instead of wirelessly while trading and also examining other data providers. I’ve tried and used different charting apps in the past few years and always went back to QCharts as it’s just awesome with its intuitive interface and unique data fields (which I was unable to find anywhere else, even till now). But the lag of the new version QCharts 6 and the screwy data of version 5.1 just pushed me away from it. Two weekends ago I started playing with and testing QuoteTracker, I looked at it in the past, and when I launched it a few days ago my opinion was more or less the same – damn ugly and confusing to work with. But this time, I didn’t have too many choices and really needed to do something about improving the lag.

TWS Scanner vs. Trade-Ideas Stock Scanner

June 3rd, 2006 by eyal | 1 Comment | Filed in Day Trading, Trading Resources

Livermoreghost has asked in a comment to a previous post about the difference between the results I get from InteractiveBrokers’ Trader WorkStation built-in scanner and the Trade-Ideas scanner so I thought others might be interested in the same and I put my response in this post. This isn’t an all out comparison of the two scanners but just how they fit into my own trading.

Hi livermoresghost, IB’s TWS scanner is great but it requires more manual work out of me since it’s less granular. So when I got Trade-Ideas I was able to build the manual eyeballing and filtering I do on the TWS scanner results into the TI filter. The TI filter then gives me the most interesting subset of results. You can do with just TWS but it’s a bit more tricky, requires closer watching of the scanner and more experience on the trader’s part. I like to use both since it helps reduce the clutter and makes the decision making on trade candidates easier. Anything that takes decision making load off of me during the trading day is blessed since there’s enough information overload as it is.
It’s quite easy to take the Trade-Ideas tool for a test drive as there’s a 7 day free trial in which you get full functionality. I don’t use most of the functions in the tool but the wide selection means that people should be able to squeeze the best out of the few functions they focus on. And that’s all you really need to select profitable trade candidates.
